LEADTIME

THE INNER TUBES

Mr. J.B. Dunlp's invention of the bicycle inner tube apparently occurred by chance. In 1888 his small son was prescribed cycling as cure for a heavy cold. W. Edlin & Co gave him a quadrant tricycle without wheels for his son. Dunlop experimented with the boy’s tricycle by fitting wheels with inflated tubes made of canvas and bonded together with liquid rubber. He patented this idea in 1888, using the word "pneumatic" for the first time.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

DOES THE INNER TUBE HAVE TO BE THE SAME SIZE AS THE TIRE?

As regards the inner tube we have to verify first the diameter (our wheel may be a 20'', 26'', 29'' etc.). Consider that if we call a wheel 29”, the size "29” refers to the diameter of the wheel including tyre and rim, so the rim will be 28" and will require a 28” inner tube. Very important is also the width. In the technical data the second number tells us the width of the inner tube. Here's an example: 20'' x 2.125  this means: 20'' is the diameter of the inner tube and 2.125 its width. Tubes and tires don’t need to match exactly. Tubes are made from butyl rubber which can stretch. The nominal sizes often do not correspond to the real size of the tire, and the adaptability of the inner tube is quite high. Sometimes we see smaller tubes in bigger tires for the weight savings and ease of installation, and bigger tubes in smaller tires because  they retain air better, because the inner tube is less stretched. In both cases there are advantages and disadvantages. It’s always best to try and match as close as you can, but there is some flexibility. Having a slightly smaller or larger tube will be quite fine. Here is the conversion chart from inch to mm.

INNER TUBE ANATOMY

Butyl rubber tubes are the most common. They are made of sheets of butyl (a type of synthetic rubber) that are coupled together in a special mold. Once placed in these molds, the butyl sheets undergo the vulcanization process, i.e. they are heated and chemically bonded to sulfur molecules, to make the final product more elastic and improve its tensile strength. It is during the vulcanization process that the inflation valve is inserted. The final product has thin and uniform walls, that are able to expand and maintain internal pressure. As an alternative to butyl, there are latex inner tubes, that are more elastic, significantly plus there’s less friction against the tyre, resulting in lower rolling resistance. Another drawback of latex tubes is that they leak air more quickly, so you may need to pump them up before every ride. Furthermore they suffer the aggression of chemical agents such as oil or simple sunlight. Based on the weight (and therefore the quantity of butyl sheets used and the final thickness of the tube), we can divide the inner tubes into standard, super-light and reinforced. The former are the most common, have a normalized thickness and are used on a myriad of wheels of different diameters and widths. The superlight are intended for racing and for those who want to save a few grams. They have thinner walls and are much more fragile (it’s easy to get a flat) than butyl tubes. Finally we have the reinforced tubes. They are made of a higher number of sheets, this means higher thickness and therefore higher puncture resistance but also more weight.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VALVE

Though not the most eye-catching component on your unicycle, the tube valve is vital as it lets air be pumped into your tyres, allowing you to ride. The 3 most common valve families are the Schrader, also known as the American valve, the Presta, also known as the French valve, and the Regina valve, also known as Italian.

THE PRESTA VALVE

Presta valves, also Sclaverand valve or French valve, are valves commonly found in high pressure racing bicycles. Whether as an inner tube valve type or as part of a tubeless system, the Presta valve is thinner (6mm) than a Schrader valve and tapers towards its head, this makes it fit to the slim profile of racing bike rims. These valves have a textured nut at the top, which can be opened to allow air to enter. On tubeless systems they have a removable core to allow tyre sealant to be poured in. Can I use a regular pump on a Presta valve? Simply put, no. A Schrader valve bike pump, for instance, contains a pin in the pump head to be inserted onto the check valve. If you try to place it on a Presta valve it won’t fit. When pumping a tyre with a Presta valve it is essential you use a Presta-specific pump or a pump with the right adapter.

THE SCHRADER VALVE

The name says it all: the Auto valve (or Schrader valve or American valve), invented in the United States, is almost universal on car, truck, and motorcycle tires. The spring-loaded closure makes it easy to use at the service station because you just need to turn on the inflator. It can also inflate using a conventional bicycle pump. It is a robust, wide and resistant valve, mainly used on touring bikes and mountain bikes. Schrader valves have a diameter of , larger than Presta valves which are 6 mm: normally air guns and compressors have a connection compatible with Schrader valves but not with Presta.

THE REGINA OR ITALIAN VALVE

It’s probably the most common valve for tubes in Italy, it’s found on most bicycles, children's and in general non-technical bikes. The external stem and the internal mechanism are completely similar to those of the Presta valves, however it is equipped with a cap to be removed for inflation and the central pin remains inside the stem. The Regina valve is also equipped with a nut to be tightened to keep the stem firmly on the wheel rim.

THE DUNLOP VALVE

More of a rarity is the Woods or Dunlop or Blitz valve. This looks like a Presta valve, but has a collar holding the valve core in place. Not all modern pumps will fit onto a Woods valve because of the collar.  The Dunlop valve is still found on trekking and city bikes. Handling the Dunlop valve is not complicated. It can also be replaced without the use of special tools or moved from inner tube to inner tube. The base of a Dunlop valve is similar in diameter to a Schrader valve, but is inflated with the same pump head as a Presta valve. Many pumps have two holes and you just have to choose the right one.  Sometimes Dunlops have too short stems and even with the hole of the right diameter you can't hook the pump, you need an adapter that can be screwed or an old bike pumps that have a hose that screws onto the valve.

The question everyone asks is, which valve is best?

In reality there is no single answer, as each valve has strengths and weaknesses.

The only interesting question is related to the ease of inflation. The problem of how to inflate first  depends on the diameter of the valve. Schrader is bigger Presta Regina and Dunlop smaller. The Presta was developed for the high pressures that are usually used on racing bikes (10 bar 145 PSI), are a little more awkward to use and not necessary for the pressures used on the unicycle. Presta valves are thinner and fit better on the narrow rims of racing models. Schrader valves have an internal gasket and a spring that closes, sometimes the gasket dries up and a little lubricant is enough to improve the seal. If you have to inflate over 5 or 6 Bar (80/90 PSI) the Schrader valve requires more effort and holds the pressure less well, however, it is the one that you can inflate with the car compressor at the gas stations. We do not recommend using Dunlop valves because without the right adapter it's impossible to inflate it. But, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so always carry a pump and make sure it’s compatible with your valve type. Happy riding!

Marco Vitale “These cranks born in my mind as training cranks, strong enough to resist any kind of “mistreatment” for long time, however not so expensive. The pedal thread is an important issue. We experienced, that nothing wrong happens to the thread, if you tighten your pedals in the proper way, but it is enough to ride once with loose pedals, that you rip the thread. Now, after the first tests on the TECNO cranks I’ve learned, that Shape and Design are more important than the pure weight. Many testers have reported that the TECNOs’ weight is similar to the one of the old heavy cranks, but they work close to the lightest Mad4one, and their stiffness makes you feel more safe. Thank you to the MAD TEAM, that testing our products always helps us to improve!".

ROBUSTEZZA e LEGGEREZZA.

Le pedivelle made in Italy 6-Pin Short

Le pedivelle made in Italy 6-Pin e 10-Pin

"I ride the cranks now 2 weeks! The feeling from the old and the new cranks are the same! Maybe at grinds the new one are a little bit slifer!I´am 100% happy with the new cranks!"

Pierre Sturny

"Hi everybody! I'm proud to ride with the new Mad4one 125mm Tecno Cranks since two weeks now! I believe these are the best cranks ever. The design is really nice, with the mad4one logo like the old ones. The shape is really different from the old ones, and I'm sure they are unbreakable. The ISIS system is also different, with no Pins, it's easier to mount on your Isis axis. I use them for flatland and street now, with the new MADApter, on my opinion that's the best system for flatland combos. You can also have them on 135mm, perfect for Trial riding. The best news is the price, more or less half than the old ones. Enjoy your ride, with Tecno!  Pierre".

Patrick Schulte

"As one of the tester of the new Mad4one Cranks the techno cranks, I want to travel with you back in time where I started to learn all the flat tricks. 7 years ago I had cranks that were so dangerous to use. My foot smashing against the sharp edge, caused me to walk with pain for 2 weeks. Every other week I had to get myself a new pair of shoes, because they all got wrecked. What would life be if I had cranks like the techno Mad4one one's. The edge is softly and with the MadApter you have a big surface which makes rolls a lot easier, and safes the life of your shoes a lot ;) For flatland I would recommend you the 125mm version, but my personal favorite are the 114mm, yes size does matter ;) Of course with MadApter in your preferred color, individualize your Unicycle. In general if you are quite new to Street, Trial and Flat and looking for solid cranks go for the Tecno M41's!".

Adrien Delecroix

"Riding with them is very good, obviously I speak of flat and trial.... I do not see a lot of difference between the MAD-TECNO and the old Mad4One... they look very strong and also the shape looks strong.... the MAD-TECNO do not touch the frame any more, they are smaller....".

Oskar Ritter

"First of all, despite the new shape, I think the new Mad4One techno cranks feel almost exactly alike the normal Mad4one cranks. But the new shape makes them a lot stronger, without the weight being increased remarkably. Also the standard Isis system, without pins, makes it even easier to mount. So the cranks are stronger, perfectly shaped, only a little bit heavier than the previous model, and best of all, half the price of the original".

Eli Brill

"The new Mad4One Tecno cranks are rugged and sleek, and flip faster than any crank I've ever ridden. The zero Q design is also ideal for roll combos. I've been riding Mad cranks since the first prototype batch in 2010, and this new evolution is a welcome improvement to cranks that were already my favorite.".

1 Sella tradizionale o Handle Saddle

Eccellente in robustezza, ottima in leggerezza e rigidità.

5 Ruote costruite a mano

Perchè i colori?

DIAMETRO TUBOSELLA  25.4 mm PASSO CUSCINETTO 100 mm DIAMETRO PORTA CUSCINETTO  42 mm
