INTRODUCTION
IN GENERAL
Let’s look at the Unicycle Urban World and its main disciplines Trial, Flatland and Street. Here concentration, balance, control of the unicycle and speed in the execution, even in extreme situations, play an important role. Mad4One have been manufacturing parts for urban unicycling since 2010 and tailor-made unicycles for Trial, Flatland and Street since 2015. Built to withstand abuse the MAD-Tecno is a top quality unicycle that offers the perfect mix of stiffness, lightness and durability. Looking for the perfect Urban unicycle? THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRIAL, FLATLAND AND STREET
The name Urban groups a number of unicycle disciplines performed outdoors in a typical urban context. Urban has a cool image, similar to skateboarding. In Trial style and tricks do not count to gain points. The objective is to ‘navigate’ (overcome/conquer) a ‘line’ (specified route) in the correct way and according to specific rules. You jump on and over obstacles such as rocks, stacks of pallets, up stairs or along railings course. Trials is a sport where concentration, balance, control of the unicycle and speed in the execution even in extreme situations play an important role. The Trial competition format is based on the accumulation of points across the sections that make up the course. In the trial the judgment is therefore very objective. In Flatland and Street, as in other unicycling disciplines (for example freestyle), the style of riding and the tricks executed are judged. Flatland involves doing tricks on flat ground and is often described as an artistic form of urban unicycling. It’s not easy to become an expert in flatland and riders take a lot longer to build up a rich variety of combos. Street takes place on an area using features typical of the urban environment. Riders use props such as curbs, ledges, stairs and handrails or any object which they can get on and off of with their unicycle in order to carry out a sequence of figures and stunts.
ROUND OR SQUARE-SHAPED FRAME?
As we have said, in Trial balance, agility of execution are skills required to overcome all the various difficulties of the course. The unicycle must be as much as possible light to jump higher, solid and stiff to react faster and of course be as much as possible stable. In Trial, the round shape of the frame is preferred to avoid getting hurt landing from a jump (it’s easy to hit the edge of the frame with the shin). The square-shaped frame is usable in Trial, but doesn’t offer any additional benefit compared to the round one. In Flatland and Street the variety of combos performed is important and the square-shaped frame offers the possibility to perform a much wider range of figures and stunts. Also in this disciples the stiffness and stability of the unicycle together with a superior handling are winning features. In the past, even in Flatland and Street, the round frame was widely used because there was no alternative in the flat-shaped frames that was as strong and performing. Mad4One have been manufacturing parts for urban unicycling since 2007 and tailor-made unicycles for Trial, Flatland and Street since 2015. The Mad4One Urban unicycles are race-ready right out of the box. Even for the basic setup of the MAD-Tecno unicycles with round or square frame we offer two types of tire that are the most common used in competition. The wide choice of pedals and saddles makes this unicycle a true "ready to race" unicycle, this means you have not to invest any additional money to make it suitable for competition. You receive, mount it and you are ready to compete.
1 The traditional Saddle or the Handle Saddle
You can either choose the traditional Mad4One saddle or go for a very innovative option, the Handle Saddle, which offers excellent durability, lightness and stiffness. The Handle Saddle was conceived for the Urban world, where the saddle is mainly used with the hands and the fast and safe handling are an important plus. We have developed two versions: One for TRIAL. Here in addition to stiffness and easy handling, lightness is very important, too. The Handle Saddle in the TRIAL version is the lightest and most sturdy saddle you can find on the market. The Handle Saddle for FLATLAND and STREET weighs 100g more than the Trial one. Here we have added a 100 g centering ballast to ensure a stable and balanced rotation when performing fast unispins.
2 Unbreakable Seatpost and a Clamp of Utmost Tightness
The Mad4One MAD-XXL seatpost is a concrete example of great stiffness and durability. Made from AL-6061-T6 aluminum alloy, forged in one piece and reinforced at the most stressed part, the MAD-XXL is the right choice for heavy duty use. In the design of the Mad4One seatpost XXL and the 3B Double Clamp we've paid great attention to robustness, tightness and solidity. They are the right combination for a formidable hold between seatpost and frame.
3 The Frame
The unicycle is the result of the choices made by the designer. There are many ways to design a mechanical detail, but only a few of them are the right ones. The weight: it’s for sure important, but if the resulting product is light and weak it's useless. The materials: better material always means longer life, as well as more stiffness and better performance. The Mad4One aluminum frames are built with more performing aluminum alloys than the commonly used AL6061-T6, and the steel ones are made from Cr-Mo 4130 chromium-molybdenum steel, an alloy of steel that guarantees greater load resistance and better tensile strength compared to unalloyed steel. Compatibility: it means freedom for you to update and improve.
4 Wheel, Cranks, MADapter and Tire
The wheels mounted on our unicycles are all hand built by us in our laboratory in 4-cross lacing pattern using high quality components. We offer also a wide choice of cranks. From the standard ISIS UnicycleStuff to the top-of-the-range, the MAD-Tecno and AGILE cranks. The MAD-Tecno and AGILE come out of the same aluminum mold and are made from ERGAL AL7075, the aluminum alloy that offers the highest strength and stiffness. But where do they differ? In the finishing phase the MAD-Tecno are beveled while the Agile are further milled with different CNC machining that optimize the weight safeguarding strength and robustness (they are -30% lighter than the MAD-Tecno). Another important component, especially for Flatland, is the MADapter. Thanks to the special interface we designed, the mounting system is simple but very solid (do not forget to tighten the screw very well!). Last but not least we have the tire. Even for the basic setup of the MAD-Tecno unicycles with round or square frame, we offer the most used in competition. Thanks to the careful selection of all these components, high in quality, stiffness and function, our Urban unicycles are the real "ready for race" solution.
5 The Pedals: each models elected for a specific use
In the unicycle every element is important, even the pedals can make a difference. We offer a wide range of options. Each type of pedal you find here is of high quality and the right choice for a specific riding style and purpose.

The wheel for Flatland and Street: better 19” or 20”?
With the 19" rim the tire contains more air than with the 20" rim. Air is the only "elastic" element in the entire unicycle, the 19" wheel will be therefore more elastic both in high jumps (pre-hop) and landings. On the other hand, the 20" wheel has a slightly lower weight (80 g) than the 19". This weight difference is all on the outer rotating part of the wheel. A lighter wheel will be more responsive and faster. It's better to mount a 19" or a 20" wheel? The choice is very subjective, there are some riders who prefer the 20" for street and flatland.
Cranks MAD-TECNO or AGILE?
Both are forged, anodized and made of ERGAL AL-7075-T6, the strongest of all aluminum alloys. In the finishing phase the MAD-Tecno are beveled while the Agile are further milled with different CNC machining that optimize the weight safeguarding stiffness, robustness and durability (they are -30% lighter than the MAD-Tecno). We launched the MAD-Tecno in 2016. They are the standard Mad4One ISIS cranks line. These cranks combine performance and cost very well and are super strong and reliable. On the AGILE cranks it’s not possible to mount the MadApter (rollo) which is useful, especially in Flatland. So if you want to mount the MadApter choose the MAD-Tecno.
The MadApter with a Special Interface
Are you a Flatter? A must-have component for your unicycle is the MadApter. Made of aluminium alloy AL-6061-T6 the Mad4One MADapter has been designed with a special interface. The cone-shaped attachment with 3 screws makes assembly quick and easy and is above all very solid. The only thing you should remember is to tighten the screws very well. MadApters can be mounted on the MAD-Tecno cranks, not on the AGILEs.

1. WHEEL LACING
When you mount the spokes try to be as accurate as possible, usually I insert the spokes so that only one tread is visible outside of the nipple (See "wheel tensioning instructions" that follow). The spoke holes on the rim are often not centered, they are slightly offset. If the offset is not zero, you must connect the hole with the flange on the same side. This is only not true, if you are cross lacing the wheel (we use this type for freestyle) where the hole on one side is connected with the flange of the opposite side. Do not confuse this cross with the number of spoke crosses we will be doing while building the wheel. ALSO, the holes on the flanges of the hub do line up ...

2. WHEEL TENSIONING
In regards to wheel building, especially with 19-inch wheels with short spokes, a spoke tensioner does not mean the best wheel build. It is better to have a good spoke wrench (adjuster). *Note that if the rim without the spokes was not straight, there are two ways to build the wheel. The first is to force the straight shape, which means the wheel will have different tensions on the spokes, but will ride smoothly. This is important for racing and road riding, because a round wheel is what matters the most. However, for 19-inch and Muni, where the wheel is being used for jumping and landing, and is prone to crashing, the robustness is the most important thing. Therefore, with wide rims (40-46mm), even tension is more important than a perfect true. In this case you can modify the shape a little, but do not force too much to correct it...
It’s the first time I inflate the Tire of my Unicycle
While the majority of you will almost certainly know how to inflate the tire on your bicycle, it’s another of those simple tasks, like changing an inner tube that can seem pretty confusing to a beginner. The tire is shipped flat for safety reasons, especially if sent by plane. When you take the wheel comes out of the box it might look like you see in the enclosed photo. You must place the tire in the right position before you start inflating the wheel. Pay attention to the position of the valve, it must be perpendicular to the rim.
How to remove the Tire and the Inner Tube of our Unicycle
There are few and simple steps to do this work in the right way. Deflate tire completely. Even a small amount of air left in the tube can make it more difficult to get the tire off. For best results press downward on wheel while deflating the tire. Push one bead of tire toward rim center. The tire bead will be pressed tight against rim. Pushing it inwards loosens the bead from the rim. Do this on the same side all around the diameter of the rim.

The Handle Saddle has been developed with the Urban world in mind. In 2017/18 we designed and tested the first version, and in late 2018 we launched this new and for the unicycle world revolutionary concept of saddle. In the development of the Handle Saddle we have given utmost priority to the concept of "grip", "easy handling" and “freedom of movement”With a nearly halved weight compared to a traditional saddle, but as rigid and strong as a traditional saddle with a carbon base, compared to which it is still lighter, the Handle Saddle is now available in different versions. 2019 – Our Interviews with the World's best Unicyclists
In 2019 Mad4One interviewed the greatest unicycle racers of all time, each one multiple champion in his specialty. They differs one from the other and come also from different countries all over the world, but they all have one element in common: the passion for unicycling. Whether it's freestylers like Katrine Jensen, Kaito Shoji and Ryan Olfers, great sprinters like Niklas Wojtek, Leonie and Alina Czimek, experts in hockey like the Swiss national Hockey Team, talented urban riders like Pierre Sturny or downhillers like Ben Soja and the most decorated muni-rider Florian Rabensteiner: they are all among the TOP of the unicycling world, but that's not all. They are also concrete models of passion, discipline and tenacity.
Pierre Sturny, the athlete at the top of the European and World rankings in the Urban specialties, is a real multi-talent. Pierre’s strength is above all his passion for unicycling. One day without riding his unicycle is not the rule for him, but rather an exception. Every day he loves to test his personal limits trying to overcome them. But that’s not all. With great enthusiasm is Pierre now engaging himself also to transfer his passion for this sport to others in his hometown. Since beginning 2018 he is the coach of a young team of urban riders. A new and fascinating experience in which Pierre is giving the best out of himself as a coach, a friend and an athlete. In this interview he tells us about this motivation and passion for unicycling.
