LEADTIME

THE MAD4ONE UNICYCLE FRAMES

Better Material means longer life, as well as more stiffness and better performance. Reliable and of high quality, stable and efficient - the Mad4One and URC frames combine high quality materials and great attention to the design of every detail. These frames offer high performance in all unicycle disciplines, whether on the racing track or on the most challenging trails and on the whole world in between.

KEY PERFORMANCE FACTORS

THE SHAPE OF THE FRAME

The SHAPE defines the use. The frames can we divided into two families: SQUARE-shaped frames, designed to perform tricks that require a standing surface for the foot (we are speaking of Freestyle, Flatland, One Foot, Race). Then we have the ROUND-shaped frames, designed to protect riders knees and ideal for those specialties such as mountain unicycling, trial, road that do not require a flat base (crown) to put your foot. There is also the "COMBINED" use, especially in the size 19- and 20-inch, where the square frame is used even for specialties where you could do without it.

THE STIFFNESS

The first feature to consider is STIFFNESS, that should enable the product to be used without bending. The required stiffness is determined by the use of the product (in our case the frame), as well as by the weight and strength of the unicyclist. Unfortunately we have often seen unicycles that were sufficiently robust for a girl of ca. 50 kg, but break within a few minutes if lent to a friend having a stronger and heavier physical structure. What is STIFFNESS? Stiffness is the extent to which the element is able to resist deformation, deflection or breakage under the action of an applied force.

THE RIGIDITY

The next important feature is the RIGIDITY of the structure, that is determined by: a) the MATERIAL, ie it depends on the amount of material and the material itself used. b) the SHAPE: the tube section shape determines the final stiffness and rigidity of the product. As the diameter increases, for the same weight, the thickness decreases and stiffness and rigidity increase. We cannot reduce the thickness too much, because the unicycle is often subjected to unexpected shocks. c) The FASTENINGS: ie the spots where the various parts of the frame are joined together. Where and how a frame is connected affects rigidity. As an example: a rod anchored to the two ends has a greater rigidity than a rod anchored at one end only.
What is RIGIDITY? Rigidity is a measure of elasticity, and represents a material’s resistance to  permanent deformation. We are also referring to structural rigidity, which is the property of a structure that it does not bend or flex under an applied force. The opposite of rigidity is flexibility. The stiffer the frame, the faster and more precise its response will be to our impulses/commands. Like a scalpel, the frame must first of all be precise. A blade that  bends or vibrates makes the surgeon's job difficult or rather impossible. The same goes for our unicyclist: as he becomes more and more skilled he will be required to perform certain tricks with the precision of a surgeon. In Freestyle, Trial, but also in Mountain Unicycling, a "soft" or "flexible" frame will be ineffective or even dangerous.

THE DURABILITY

The last two characteristcs to consider are the WEIGHT and the DURABILITY of our unicycle, which are the result of all decisions made by the designer. After having defined SHAPE – STIFFNESS and RIGIDITY, the designer decides on MATERIALS, DIMENSIONS and FASTENINGS that will significantly contribute to defining the characteristics of the frame. What is DURABILITY? Structural Durability deals with the capability of structures or components to withstand the loads encountered in service over a specified period of use without failure occurring in the form of incipient cracks or unacceptable degradation. Durability can be measured in different ways, depending on the field of application. For example in years of life, hours of use or operating cycles.

A SUPERIOR QUALITY ALUMINUM ALLOY FOR THE MAD4ONE ALUMINUM FRAMES

The square-shaped Mad4One frames are made from aluminum alloy AL6069-T6 which differs from the common AL6061-T6 in the following aspects: superior resistance to deformation up to +30%, greater load resistance and greater load resistance in presence of corrosion. reduce the life of the frame and run the risk that it suddenly breaks. The round Mad4One frames are made from aluminum alloy AL7005-T6, that compared to the more common AL6061-T6 has a greater load resistance (+12%) and a higher fatigue resistance (+56%).

THE BEST STEEL ALLOY ALSO FOR THE URC FAMILY

Strictly speaking every steel is an alloy, but not all steels are called "alloy steels". The simplest steels are iron alloyed with carbon. However, the term "alloy steel" is the standard term referring to steels with other alloying elements added deliberately in addition to the carbon such as e.g.: SILICON, that increases strength but reduces weldability; COPPER, for higher corrosion resistance; MANGANESE, that increases hardness but decreases elasticity; CHROME, that increases hardness and does not reduce elasticity. The Mad4One steel frames, we are talking about the URC frames, are made with CrMo-4130 chromium-molybdenum steel, an alloy of steel that guarantees greater load resistance, lower specific weight and better tensile strength compared to unalloyed steel. Thanks to the superior features of this material we were able to reduce thickness and ensure greater lightness without compromising in any way the great strength and stability of the frame and making URC unicycles also competitive compared to mid-range aluminum frames.

HERE'S IS WHAT WE HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO

It is important to check the width of the frame (the bearing spacing of the wheel) to be sure that the hub fits to the wheel. For Trial it’s better to have a round crown frame without edges. Your shins will be safe! This is valid also for mountain unicycling. In these specialties a round-shaped frame makes your riding more comfortable and safe. In Freestyle and other specialties we often perform tricks in stand-up. In this case you need a unicycle with a flat crown to put your feet to perform some specific tricks. The wider the crown, the more comfortable and user-friendly the frame will be. With a flat crown with an anti-slip surface you will execute your tricks with more control and confidence. for this reason we have designed our frames with two round sharp-edged grooves, called "false holes", that have proven to offer an excellent grip and the right feeling of confidence and stability. Another characteristic to consider is the clearance, ie the distance between wheel and frame that tells us which tire can be mounted on our unicycle.

Pay attention also to the WEIGHT.
Is a lighter frame better than a heavy one?

Yes, a light frame is for sure better than a heavy one as long as it does not lose in stiffness and stability. Frames that are too light do not last over time. Also the performance is not at the top, because a flexible frame absorbs energy. The final consideration is that there is also a limit to the lightness beyond which lightness becomes a defect.

Braking system and tire

As regards mountain unicycling: in this specialty almost all unicyclists are using a disc brake. In this case pay attention that the frame is equipped with the disc brake mounting tab. There are two mounting systems: one on the right and one on the left of the wheel.  Check the frame of your unicycle, in fact not all frames are designed for mounting the brake on both sides (the Mad4One Muni frames  have disc brake mounting tab on both sides). The disc brake appears on the market around 2012 and in recent years it has radically modified the way to control the unicycle in downhill. The traditional frames designed with pad brake mounting tab are dedicated to a specific wheel size. In fact there is the frame exclusively for the 24-inch wheel, the frame for the 26-inch wheel and so on. We think that it is the right time, to think of frames NOT designed for the pad brake.

The Long Neck

The Mad4One frames for mountain unicycling in sizes M and L are available in the Long Neck version, too. In this case the vertical tube of the frame is 10 cm longer than the standard one. With the Long Neck the minimum leg length is increased by 10 cm. This frame is the right choice for taller riders because it provides greater stiffness and a more stable saddle positioning. Combined with our MAD-XXL seatpost the Long-Neck frame offers the best leg position even for unicyclists taller than 2 m.

Some important measures to avoid mistakes

What is the right saddle height? How do I measure my leg length? How do I calculate how long my seatpost should be? These are some of the questions we ask ourselves when we start configuring our new unicycle.

The WHEEL: which size can I mount?

After defining the right frame size for me, be it a Muni URC or Mad4One frame, I need to know what wheel size can be mounted on that frame. The Mad4One aluminum frame is in fact available in 3 sizes, while the URC CrMo steel frame is offered in 4 different sizes.

The FRAME: which is the right size for me?

The height of the frame added to the thickness of the saddle and the length of the cranks defines the "minimum leg length" needed to use the unicycle. We are talking about the B-value of our unicycle.

I telai Mad4One in alluminio e acciaio, ecco come li abbiamo progettati

Freno a disco a 2 o 4 pistoni?

1 Sella tradizionale o Handle Saddle

Eccellente in robustezza, ottima in leggerezza e rigidità.

5 Ruote costruite a mano

Perchè i colori?
